- Limited-edition, annually released single malt Japanese whisky from Mars Tsunuki Distillery in Kagoshima, Japan
- 2023 release of Tsunuki’s yearly single malt edition
- 100% malted barley, lightly peated (average 5–6 ppm)
- Minimum 3 years old; aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels
- Toasted, sweet grain on the nose is accompanied by orchard fruit and woody smoke; the palate speaks of bergamot orange marmalade and grilled lemons with sultry campfire smoke on the finish
- Non-chill filtered; 50% ABV
The Tsunuki Distillery is in the south of Japan where the climate leans hot and humid, especially compared to that of Mars’s Komagatake Distillery high in the Japanese Alps. The whisky of Tsunuki is full of rich fruit and bass notes—perfect pairings for a slightly higher level of peat. This year’s release of single malt, which year over year best represents the distillery’s house style, is particularly fruity in multiple dimensions, displaying everything from citrus oil to stewed fruit, with a smokiness that will appeal to fans of peated Highland Scotches.
