The Sakurajima komikan, Japan’s smallest orange, takes its name from the active volcano around which it grows, requiring laborious care and enjoying a one-month-long harvest season each year. Local grower’s must brush the fruit skin by hand to remove ash that falls from the nearby active volcano from which the orange takes its name; this is done to avoid damage to the fruit that the ash incurs. An excellent addition to Skurnik’s growing selection of sippable gins, Komasa is also extremely enjoyable with a splash of club soda or fresh orange juice.
