Stakhovsky Wines
Sergiy Stakhovsky, a former professional tennis player—whose defeat of Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013 is considered one of the tennis world’s great upsets—launched Stakhovsky Wines with the 2018 vintage to prove to his countrymen that delicious wine could be made in Ukraine. Having spent time playing for Villa Primrose in Bordeaux, he acquired a passion for wine and when he founded his estate in the limestone and volcanic clay soils of the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains he still had “one foot in Bordeaux.” His winery’s 22 hectares of vineyards are near Muzhievo village in the Zakarpattia Region, bordering Hungary and Slovakia. The vineyard is sustainably farmed and protected from cold air by the Carpathian Mountains and is situated on the Pannonian Plain which brings warm air from the west. The winemaking is overseen by Geyza Veresh. Since Stakhovsky rejoined the Ukrainian National Guard in 2022, his brother has run the winery.
