La Rioja Alta and Vega Sicilia score 96 and 97 points, respectively!
The 2004 vintage is shaping up to be another legendary year. Palbo Alvarez of Vega Sicilia said: “2004 was a textbook vintage with perfect temperatures.” All that amiable weather and patience have been well worth the wait! Though we haven’t seen 2004 releases from all the major Rioja houses, Vega Sicilia’s ‘Unico’ and La Rioja Alta’s ‘904’ have lead the pack with these stunning wines and others are starting to take notice. The Wine Advocate said of the 2004 Vega Sicilia ‘Unico’: “The 2004 has a haunting bouquet of dark brambly black fruit, cassis, honey… the palate is full-bodied with succulent, ripe, intense black cherries, white pepper, minerals and liquorice and it fans out beautifully towards the finish with tar-tinged black fruit interlaced with black pepper.” They were equally enthralled with the ’04 ‘904’ from La Rioja Alta: “This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja.” We are excited to release this wine and hope you will welcome it as well. Until then we have the stock on the 2001 ‘904’ (which also 96 points from The Wine Advocate!).
