Tasting Notes

Perhaps the most classic Austrian eau-de-vie in the entire lineup, this rowanberry eau-de-vie is produced by Hans Reisetbauer in Axberg, Austria. The rowanberry, a member of the Mountain Ash family also known as a vogelberry, is a small berry with a large seed and a flavor reminiscent of almond. The berries are wild harvested by hand in autumn and sourced from over 700 meters above sea level in the Mühlviertel in Upper Austria, as well as the Czech Republic. After harvesting, the berries are destemmed and fermented for 12 days between 16–17 °C (60–63 °F).

Distilled twice in a Christian Carl copper pot still and rested for three years, it takes 35 kg (over 77 lbs) of ripe rowanberries to produce one liter of eau-de-vie. Earthy and floral with notes of cherry, almond, angelica root, and horseradish with faint allspice on the nose. The palate is elegant and refined but punchy, with cherry, violet, and orange blossom on a very floral finish vaguely reminiscent of kirschwasser. This beautiful eau-de-vie happens to be Han’s favorite expression of his entire range of eaux-de-vie. 41.5% ABV.
