Ried Heiligenstein:
The Bründlmayer family owns 12 hectares right in the center of the Zöbinger Heiligenstein. 10,5 hectares are planted with Riesling. About 20% of the vineyards are
trained in the Lyra trellis system. The other Heiligenstein vines are raised by the traditional Guyot method with the berries hanging 50-60 centimeters above the ground.
Thinning is done as required to restrict the average yield to 3500-4000 liters per hectare for this classic (Kamptal DAC) Version. Two Reserves from Heiligenstein (Lyra,
Alte Reben) are used to be harvested later in the year.

Today the old vines (Alte Reben) average 50 years of age with the oldest reaching as many as 75 years.

Older vines are less productive, forming fewer and smaller grapes that profit from a well-developed root system. This root system reaches deep into the ground and
supplies its fruit with potent nourishment. Consequently, wines of these vineyards are extremely flavorful with enormous concentration.

From a geological point of view, the Zöbinger Heiligenstein site is not only the oldest but probably also the most interesting on the estate: the soil consists of approximately 270 Mio years old Perm desert sandstone. The sediments contain volcanic inclusions and carbonized remains of primeval vegetation. The uniqueness of this soil, its perfect gradient and position (SW to SE in a climatic borderland) provide ideal preconditions for growing outstanding wines. During the day warm winds (often due to the effects of the Pannonian climate) mount along the site whereas by nightfall cool gusts from the North start blowing through the Kamp Valley and bring forward the aromatic expression of the grapes.

"The 2021 Riesling Heiligenstein Alte Reben contains the oldest vines of the estate planted in 1923. The average age of vines is 65 years old, with some ungrafted, picked in the heart of the Heiligenstein from mid-slope terraces on Permian sandstone. It was fermented spontaneously in large barrel and stayed on gross lees. Just 4,700 liters were made in 2021. While a slight touch of blossom honey opens the nose, there is zero botrytis. This is followed by a slight herbal lift of hayflower, dried yarrow and the lifted sense of dried lemon peel. The palate has absolute precision, coming in with clear-cut freshness—mineral and precise. A citric, slightly astringent but thrilling backbone of zestiness is supported by a core of hard stone. This is beautiful, poised, serene, and deep, with Riesling's inherent majesty on display. Taut, bright, regal, and eternal, this is all the aroma, mouthfeel and depth you want. The finish is all stone. (Bone-dry)"

"Utterly deep and mineral yet bright and refreshing on the saline and lemony nose opens Bründlmayer's iconic 2021 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1–TW Alte Reben. This is a full-bodied, elegant and finely tannic, sustainably saline and mineral Heiligenstein that remains the reference for now and forever in this spectacular cru that regularly delivers some of the greatest dry Rieslings on planet wine. This 2021 is very fresh, lean and tight and possibly on the border of what wine lovers will accept for Riesling, but our patience is one of the best talents of this extraordinary Riesling that I don't want to overrate but to cellar. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2024."
