Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein 'Alte Reben' 1 ÖTW Kamptal DAC Riesling

Brndlmayer Ried Zbinger Heiligenstein 1 TW Alte Reben Kamptal DAC Riesling

The Bründlmayer family owns 12 hectares right in the center of the Zöbinger Heiligenstein. 10,5 hectares are planted with Riesling. About 20% of the vineyards are trained in the Lyra trellis system. The other Heiligenstein vines are raised by the traditional Guyot method with the berries hanging 50-60 centimeters above the ground. Thinning is done as required to restrict the average yield to 3500-4000 liters per hectare for this classic (Kamptal DAC) Version. Two Reserves from Heiligenstein (Lyra, Alte Reben) are used to be harvested later in the year.

Today the old vines (Alte Reben) average 50 years of age with the oldest reaching as many as 75 years.

Older vines are less productive, forming fewer and smaller grapes that profit from a well-developed root system. This root system reaches deep into the ground and supplies its fruit with potent nourishment. Consequently, wines of these vineyards are extremely flavorful with enormous concentration.

From a geological point of view, the Zöbinger Heiligenstein site is not only the oldest but probably also the most interesting on the estate: the soil consists of approximately 270 Mio years old Perm desert sandstone. The sediments contain volcanic inclusions and carbonized remains of primeval vegetation. The uniqueness of this soil, its perfect gradient and position (SW to SE in a climatic borderland) provide ideal preconditions for growing outstanding wines. During the day warm winds (often due to the effects of the Pannonian climate) mount along the site whereas by nightfall cool gusts from the North start blowing through the Kamp Valley and bring forward the aromatic expression of the grapes.

"In spite of global warming, the Kamptal is still a cool-climate location, and you really feel that in this restrained, medium-bodied dry riesling. An impressively firm and concentrated core with a citrusy intensity. This will certainly benefit from more time in the bottle and will reward abundant patience. From organically grown grapes."

"One of the first 2022 Heiligensteins where I have found a salty note, along with sour limey citrus and something slightly woody (but not oaky). Deep, chewy and golden in flavour with a long, layered, very salty finish. (JH)"

"The 2022 Riesling Heiligenstein Alte Reben is from vines planted in 1923, as well as other old vines with an average of 65 years of age. It was fermented and aged in one large, neutral 2,500-liter barrel, where it stayed for two winters. The nose is still reduced and has a little yeasty funk. Immediate fluidity and concentration define the palate. Smokiness follows a vein of deepest citrus notions, of citrus oil rather than fresh fruit, smooth, gliding, elongated and essence-like, running along hard stone. This wine of rock and soil should not be touched in the coming ten years. The 2022 is exquisite, stony, linear, strait-laced and eternal. (Bone-dry)"

"The 2022 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1–TW Alte Reben opens with a deep, intense, saline and remarkably concentrated bouquet of ripe lemon fruits, lime, herbs and crushed sandstone. Dense and juicy on the palate and rounder than in recent years, probably matured in more small oak (?), this is a rich, round and juicy yet elegant as well as savory Heiligenstein with an unusual roundness and texture at this early stage. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in March 2024. To be released at the end of this year."
