Ried Steinmassl:
In the Steinmassl vineyard, the vines are partially trained in the Lyre-system—this method doubles canopy exposure and favors aeration which improves photosynthesis and prevents dreaded fungus diseases. The vineyard is located on a ridge that ranges from 340 meters above sea level in the south-southeast to 240 meters in the north-northwest, with a broad shoulder extending out towards the southwest.  The Riesling vines of the Steinmassl vineyard grow on primary rock with mica-schist. This geological formation of Austria’s southern forest district possesses as classic and traditional a soil type as one is likely to find anywhere in the Kamptal, Kremstal or Wachau. Paragneiss and mica schist make up the crystalline bedrock, together with dark amphibolite and light colored granite gneiss. Deep weathering has resulted in a brown earth soil layer of variable thickness (up to one meter in places), which contains scattered rock fragments and which, despite the siliceous nature of the bedrock, can sometimes be a little calcareous. After a gentle pressing of up to 8 hours the must ferments in stainless steel, and has extended contact on its fine lees before bottling.

"Very cool and defined with terrific wet-stone minerality, this is a fantastic introduction to the world of high-end Austrian dry riesling. This is what the somms mean by Urgestein, i.e., primary-rock minerality. Extremely delicate white-peach, Amalfi-lemon and lemon-balm aromas. Really long and precise finish. From organically grown grapes."

"There's a leesy aroma here to complement the slightly smoky sour-citrus. Marked note of minerally stone dust. Lime fruit on the palate and eye-wateringly high acidity, only just in balance and giving a strong message to stay away for a few more years. Challenging at the moment. (JH)"

"The 2022 Riesling Steinmassl was harvested on paragneiss. It is a picture of absolute clarity—of stone and rock expressed in citrus juiciness, with just a little concession to stone fruit. This is absolutely mineral, juicy, tight and certainly bright, with the promise of more generosity in the future. Citrus depth, Reine Claude plum juiciness, slenderness, vivid intent and thrilling incisiveness mark this wine. (Bone-dry)"

"The 2022 Riesling Ried Steinmassl 1–TW shows clear, reduced fruit but a dense nose with a fine, mineral, cool spiciness. It is initially mouthwatering on the palate, then drying. This is still a strict, stringent, very firm, compact Riesling from the primary rock, but it is also fine and with very good potential. It is persistently salty and spicy. This is not a Riesling for now, but for 10 years from now. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg, September 2023."
