Variety: Riesling • Region: Wachau • Vineyard: Ried Höhereck • Soil Type: Gneiss, mica schist, and loam • Fermentation & Élevage: Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel. Élevage in steel with a small amount of neutral Austrian oak
Ried Höhereck:
The vineyard is characterized by barren and stony ground, which hardly exists in many places and allows the gneiss to penetrate. The higher corner exposes itself directly to the south, but the solar radiation is cushioned by continuous winds from the northwest. Ideal terroir for Riesling, which is generally a bit creamier here than in the Steinertal valley, but similarly mineral.

"Such complexity on the nose, from white flowers to grapefruit, peaches to aniseed. It's mouthwateringly fresh as well as compact on the medium- to full-bodied palate with a limey, mineral brightness throughout. Try after 2025."

"The 2023 Riesling Höhereck Smaragd is grown in the orthogneiss of this steep yet sheltered site. Herbal intensity joins the citrus. Here, intense lemon balm, totally scented, takes over on the nose. The palate is slender and has a grounding undertone of wet stone, still with a yeasty vibe, but the body is essentially slender, pure, bright and elongated, with brightness and tension. Bravo. The finish is a pure note of tangerine. Just 700 bottles are made of this little treasure. (Bone-dry)"

"The 2022 Riesling Höhereck Smaragd is from a steep parcel within a small, elevated yet sheltered site. The poor soil has just 35-40cm of topsoil on orthogneiss. Tangerine and lemon balm aromas make for a gently lifted nose. The aromatic freshness stretches out and expands its citrus charm across the palate, tingling with citric aroma, verging on lovely, gentle zestiness. This has such a light touch and such elegant, citrus-fragrant stony depth—all handled so gently. (Bone-dry)"

"The 2022 Ried Höhereck Riesling Smaragd shows a spicy, concentrated and somewhat overripe yet puristic nose with light phenolics. It is dense and powerful on the palate, tightly structured and rich in substance, with a salty, spicy finish and intense length. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2023."
