The Heiligenstein vineyard is one of the most famed and best crus in all of Austria. It is a special and unique geological formation on the European continent; existing as a geological island. The 30-60 year old vines grow on a complex sedimentary soil structure, on sandstone conglomerate with red arkoses and volcanic quartz porphyries. The narrow terraces yield a highly complex Riesling with strong personality.

"This firmly structured dry riesling shows off the serious side of the Heiligstein site, but also has plenty of citrus aromas. Still a bit closed, but with impressive depth on the medium-bodied palate, and the long finish is positively firm. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2026."

"Attractive combination of lime-citrus and crushed-stone mineral aromas. Just the very first suggestion of non-sweet honey. Powerful, sour-fresh. A big but vibrantly fresh wine, more flavour than finesse at this stage. Needs time. (JH)"

"The vines of Hiedler's 2022 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1–TW are rooted in a sedimentary complex of sandstone conglomerate with inclusions of red arkoses and volcanic quartz porphyries. This 280-million-year-old Permian soil, unique in Austria, is home to 60-year-old vines rooted on narrow terraces; the berries produce a highly complex Riesling with a strong, finely spiced, mineral personality year after year. The 2022 shows a dense, yeasty nose of just-ripe fruit with fresh, leafy and herbaceous aromas. Intense and fleshy on the palate, with concentrated fruit and fine acidity as well as lasting minerality, this is an elegant, highly complex, still far too young Heiligenstein with great potential. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2023."

"A fragrant, generous style, with notes of citrus blossoms and elderflower introducing a complex mix of apple, plum and dried herbs. The flavors are in perfect harmony with the crunchy acidity, mineral depth and earthy undertones, showing a pleasingly bitter quinine note and accents of fresh mint on the persistent finish. Drink now through 2032.—K.B."
