Rauenthal Nonnenberg [Monopol] Riesling Trocken
Rauenthal Nonnenberg [Monopol] Riesling Trocken
I find this to be the spirit-kin of Alzinger’s Höhereck, something both numinous and inexplicable, with flavors you never imagined finding in something called “wine.” This is markedly clear in the ’17, which is a straightforward above-ground rendition, like the cool breeze after a squall. All to the good! Mysterious flowers, apricot blossom and Cox’s orange pippin; the finish is like chewing iris petals; searching, angular, bewitching. Top Rauenthalers have the mysteries of great Nahe Rieslings, and we’d know this better if there were only more top Rauenthalers (this commune is ground-zero for Rheingau underachieving, alas).

"What a wild, lime and bergamot nose this remarkable dry riesling has. At once ripe and creamy, but stony and spicy on the medium-bodied palate. Very flinty and racy with great tension. Enormously long, spicy and wet-stone finish. Limited production. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2025."

"Super-racy and super-minerally, but what fantastic citrus complexity this also has. Such an exciting expression of the Rheingau, although this is not big, dramatic or in any other way obvious. But the crystalline brilliance in the finish is staggering. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold."

"The 2023 Nonnenberg is deep, clear, intense and remarkably fine on the nose that develops fully ripe and elegant fruit spiced with slate plates, herbal nuances and a certain lemony salinity. Seriously complex! This is fine and elegant on the first palate and then immediately dramatic and storming toward the finish that is pure, saline and savory and in the context of the vintage chez Breuer, which is pretty unique in style because it doesn't show any hints of super ripeness, power or textural elements, just the purity of the Nonnenberg terroir. This Riesling is intense and fleshy on the elegant mid-palate yet remains pure, tight and fresh on the finish and is rather straight and coolish in style. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted in August 2024. To be released in March 2025."
