The term “mexicanito” can be used variously for different maguey which resemble small Agave rhodacantha (commonly known as Mexicano), or else maguey which are suspected to result from cross-pollination between Agave rhodacantha and Agave karwinskii.
A rarity across Oaxaca, this is the second release we’ve seen of Mexicanito from Felipe, a third-generation maestro mezcalero and the grandson of Angel Vasquez García, one of the first mezcaleros to establish a palenque in San Esteban. After spending 8 years laboring in the US, Felipe returned home to resume the family tradition and has since been producing truly captivating batches of Madrecuishe and other varieties for La Medida.
