Tasting Notes

In the autumn of her years, Berta Vasquez has been recognized as one of Oaxaca’s most iconic maestra mezcaleras. The daughter of San Baltazar Chichicapam’s beloved mezcalero Hipólito Vasquez, Berta married the son of the late Agustin García, another local legend who was killed at his palenque in 1971. Berta’s husband took over the family palenque, where she worked and raised their five children alongside him. Tragically, her husband passed away prematurely, leaving Berta and her eldest son to support the family together. When tragedy struck a second time and her son also passed, Berta stepped up to manage the still herself—and stepped into what can only be seen as destiny.

Today, Berta’s mezcales are widely acknowledged as some of the finest in the state; the vibrance of her spirits, the concentration of flavor, and the boldly assertive aromatics she creates are truly thrilling experiences, worth sharing now and revisiting for years as the distillates evolve. 46.42% ABV
