Tasting Notes
Ultramarine is a limited-edition blended Scotch whisky produced by Compass Box, blended by lead whisky maker, James Saxon. The flagship release from the Extinct Blends Quartet—Compass Box’s reimagining of four blended Scotches which would otherwise be lost to the past using some of their rarest and most idiosyncratic whisky stocks—Ultramarine draws inspiration from the sherry and cigar box profiles of the iconic luxury blended Scotch bottlings of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Powerfully flavorsome and impressively textural, this release relies on mature malts from the Caol Ila and Glendullan distilleries, aged grain whisky from the Cameronbridge and Girvan distilleries, and a medley of pre-blended stocks. The nose delivers toffee, Chantily cream, and honey over pronounced, well-integrated peat smoke which transitions to a palate showcasing clove, ginger, dried mango, and vanilla custard with cocoa powder and raisin on the finish. Non-chill filtered with no added coloring; 51% ABV. Limited release of only 5,430 bottles.
