Raised beside the Tuxcacuesco River, Santos Juarez and his son Ricardo are both experienced farmers, cultivating not only 12 distinct varieties of agave (nearly all subspecies of Agave angustifolia), but simultaneously raising traditional milpa crops of corn, squash, and beans alongside tropical fruits like mango, papaya, and pomegranate, and even caretaking bees to promote pollination and to extract honey. Ricardo moved temporarily to Washington State as well, working in orchards of apples & pears, and returned with new knowledge and skills to apply to their family’s land and spirits. The impact of this generational and agrarian approach echoes in every scent and sip of their destilados; understandably, Santos and his family are one of the lynch pins in Mezonte’s line up of heritage producers.
