The NV Brut Premier Cru Rose de Saignee is 100% Pinot Noir, all from the 2009 harvest. Kirsch, sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, mint and spices all waft from the glass. This is a pretty delicate, ethereal style of Rose considering the year and the saignee style, but the wine’s balance is quite attractive. I imagine the Rose de Saignee will offer its finest drinking sooner rather than later. Disgorgement date: June 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015.
A hint of malt adds a rich layer to the flavors of ripe fruit—black cherry, berries, grilled plum, whole-grain toast and smoke—all set on a refined texture. An elegant, flavorful rosé, with lovely, fine-tuned acidity. Disgorged April 2011. Drink now through 2018. 302 cases imported. –AN
(all 2010 wine from Cumieres; disgorged in February, 2013 after 30 months on its lees): Light, bright pink. Spicy red berries, potpourri and smoky minerals on the highly perfumed nose. The palate offers sappy raspberry and musky cherry pit flavors that show a refreshingly bitter edge. The spicy quality comes back on the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and focus.
As usual, this wine is deep and vividly crimson in color, preparing you for the sappy, concentrated aromas of raspberry, blackberry and blueberry to come. On the palate it's pungent and ripe but also remarkably silky and fine, with a wonderfully harmonious fragrance and an unusual clarity and precision of flavor. It's extremely impressive, even for Geoffroy, and overall this is one of the very best versions of this cuvée that I can remember. It will be exciting to watch this develop over the coming months. The NV Brut Rosé de Saignée is a bit more delicate and forward in its bouquet than the Blanc de Rose. Here the flavors are of course much more Pinot-inflected, with hints of earthiness, sweet tobacco and dried flowers that caress the palate. I especially like the way the Rosé de Saignée blossoms on the mid-palate and finish. Today, the Rosé de Saignée is a bit more accessible than the Blanc de Rose, but also slightly more forward as well. This bottle was disgorged in February 2013.
