"The 2014 Barolo Riserva is a wine I have followed since I first tasted it in November of 2014 as a young must fermenting in tank. Now, it is a ten-year-old wine being released after having spent five years in cask and another five years in bottle. Aromatic and beautifully complex, the 2014 offers up an enticing mélange of tobacco, cedar, leather, spice, dried herbs and rose petal. The wild bouquet and searing tannins are reminders of a year marked by heavy rain and cold weather. In retrospect, the 2014 might have done better with less time in wood, but it is a very fine Barolo just the same. It is a testament to what was possible in 2014 with diligent farming and winemaking."

"This is the big gun from Luigi Scavino's Azelia. In the bottle with the white and gold label, the 2014 Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera reveals a medium-dark appearance with budding tertiary tones of cherry confit, campfire ash, tar and road pavement. The wine is open-knit and offers broad intensity with a baritone personality. Despite the freshness of the vintage, it lacks some of the high notes and the tension that Nebbiolo is often capable of giving. I would not extend the drinking window much beyond the 20-year mark. This is a limited release of 3,000 bottles."

"At 10 years, this Barolo is starting to settle down and reveal its potential. Cherry, raspberry, plum, earth and eucalyptus aromas and flavors ride a solid base of tannins and vivid acidity. Balanced and long, with earth, iron and tobacco notes lingering. Nonetheless, this is still a bit awkward initially, opening nicely with about a half hour of aeration, so decant now or age for a few more years. Best from 2026 through 2042. —B.S."

"Hold on to your glass! This 2014 Barolo Riserva's nose is a thrilling combo of dark fruits, salty notes and dried leaves. The palate is a flavor party with earthy undertones, herbal nuances, tobacco and dried spices. Firm tannins and a robust structure keep it all in harmony. The finish is so long, you'll need a map to find your way back! Drink now–2040.—J.P."

"A savory Barolo showing notes of mulberries, porcini, dried flowers and some coffee. Medium-bodied, pleasantly earthy and supple with relatively mellow tannins. Drink or hold."

"Lush ruby with bright, orange tinges. Stunning nose of undergrowth, cherry and with a whiff of shoe polish, leather and truffle. Some development on the palate but closes up surprisingly quickly. Monumental but superfine tannins and with jewelly acidity. Slow aromatic finish. (WS)"

"I have not tasted this Riserva since the 2007 vintage, so it's a great delight to sample the Azelia 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera today. In the bottle with the gold and white label, fruit comes from a tiny and little-known site on the east-facing slope opposite Lazzarito. The vines are 95 years old on average, although some are as old as 120. They produce just two or three clusters per vine. This is another vineyard site with closed conditions and cool air currents that produce very firm, compact and age-worthy wines. Hence the Riserva designation. Tasted now 10 years after the harvest, you get a delightful expression with budding tones of evolution with black licorice and camphor ash. It ages in oak casks for five years, with another five years in bottle. You feel the tannins at the back, but they are soft and silky. This is a gorgeous wine that rewards those who drink it now. Only 3,100 bottles exist."

"Attractive mineral notes with dried red fruit, nut shell, red spices and cedar. Medium- to full-bodied with compact but already supple tannins. Meaty and long with a round finish. So fine and silky. Already attractive, but still can age."

"This red has settled into a sweet spot, with fading cherry, berry, leather, spice and woodsy aromas and flavors. Shows tannins that seem to have mellowed too, until they emerge on the long finish. Drink now through 2036."
