  • Nebbiolo from Monvigliero, the Grand Cru of Verduno village, first produced by Scavino in 2007
  • In the northern part of the Barolo region, this vineyard lies in a very special microclimate: warm during the day and cool at night due to the fresh air currents from the Tanaro river
  • Vines planted in 1968 and 2005
  • 310 meters elevation with south-east orientation
  • Predominantly limestone soil, light colored mixed with chalky veins
  • Harvested by hand, normally after the 10th of October
  • Submerged-cap maceration (10-12 days on avg) in stainless steel rotary fermenter
  • Indigenous yeast fermentation (20-30 days on avg) in stainless steel
  • Malolactic fermentation in 225 L barrels over the winter
  • Aged 20 months in large French oak cask and 3 months stainless steel, plus 14-16 months in bottle
  • Approximately 400 cases produced annually

"This has aromas of tar, violets, cherries, orange rind and a touch of aniseed. Medium- to full-bodied with a firm tannin structure that seems to recede toward the finish. The fruit is juicy, tender, pretty and refined. It should be more evident once the tannins mellow out. Exciting. Better from 2030."

"Since 2007, Paolo Scavino produces just a single cask from less than 1ha in Monvigliero. The open, unprotected slope makes for a fresh microclimate, and proximity to the Tanaro River brings pronounced temperature excursions between day and night. A stunningly gorgeous nose transcends rose and violet, bringing in pink peppercorn, thyme blossom and sweet herbs. Gracefully proportioned though still taut and compact, its vertical tannins are stitched up and powdery – not yet ready to dissolve. A becoming finish of succulent orange."

"The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is a pretty dense wine. I don't see quite the delineation or nuance of the finest wines in this range or the best wines from this site, which leads me to believe Scavino is still getting a feel for Monvigliero. For many top producers, this would be a superb wine, but in this lineup, it's in the middle of the pack. Macerated cherry, spice, tobacco and cedar struggle to emerge fully. I hope to revisit the 2021 in a few years' time."

"This is a retaste. Nebbiolo from Verduno in the north of the Barolo appellation enjoys good exposures and plenty of light. The Scavino family farms one hectare in this village on loose soils with sand and yellowish marl. Made with fully destemmed fruit, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero has an elegant nose with rose, red berry and dried herb. The mouthfeel in this warm vintage is quite generous, and the wine offers concentrated fruit, bold cherry flavors and sweet tannins."

"The compelling 2020 Monvigliero from Paolo Scavino has intense aromas recalling blue flower, ripe berry, dried mint and new leather. Full-bodied and enveloping, it shows structure, concentration and elegance in the form of fleshy cherry, crushed strawberry, blood orange and licorice before closing on a mentholated note. Velvety tannins provide taut support and texture. It's utterly delicious. Drink 2028–2038. Abv: 14.5%"

"Harmonious, well-structure and layered. The nose shows aromas of wild strawberries, sour cherries, dried herbs, crushed stones and flowers. It's medium- to full-bodied with finely grained tannins, yet it is still firm at this stage supported by fresh acidity. Precise with a dense but juicy texture and harmonious structure. Long finish. Try after 2028."

"Coming from an esteemed site in Verduno, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is a dark ruby hue and opens to notes of ripe black raspberries, grenadine, candied roses, sweet soil, and fresh sage. Medium-bodied, it's rounded and approachable up front before revealing ripe tannins and a savory saline finish with notes of fresh orange. It is another impressive and highly refined wine from the Scavino family to drink over the coming 15-20 years."

"Scavino's 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is bright and aromatically effusive, as Barolos from this site tend to be, but on the palate, it is quite a bit more reserved. It will be interesting to see if the 2020 emerges with time in bottle, as today, it is dominated by fierce tannins. Dried fruit, tobacco, mint and worn-in leather linger. Ideally, I would like to see more Monvigliero sensuality here."

"The Paolo Scavino 2020 Barolo Monvigliero has some of the metallic notes that I got in the other wines in this portfolio, but they're delivered here to a lesser extent. You get Swiss chard or a leafy vegetable, iodine, dried flower and sour cherry. There is better fruit definition and some bitterness that recalls persimmon or tangerine skin. That floral note takes on a much bigger role with time with hints of magnolia or heritage rose. Only 5,100 bottles were produced. The Monvigliero is nice, but here too I find a subtle lack of clarity and am suggesting a shorter drinking window as a result."

"Scavino first bottled Monvigliero as a separate single-vineyard wine in 2007. Only 0.83 hectares in size and situated on limestone soils, its proximity to the Tanaro river moderates the microclimate. The nose is intense and pungent, exhibiting pure red fruits and no balsamic tones. The attack is lush but also forthright and vibrant, the stunning fruit supported by underlying acidity. Very concentrated, it shows welcome austere grip. Textured but elegant, this imperious Barolo is built to last, and the finish is exceptionally long."

"The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is a gorgeous wine that marries the classicism of this site with the bright, forward fruit that is such a signature of the Scavino style. Freshly-cut roses, kirsch, mint, cinnamon and blood orange race across the palate, supported by vibrant acids and veins of sinewy tannin. This seems to call for at least a few years in bottle."

"One of the more reticent wines in the range, the 2011 Barolo Monvigliero is also one of the most promising. Understatement and nuance are the calling cards in a Barolo that captures a highly appealing interplay between the unique personality of this Verduno site and the trademark Scavino textural richness. Bright beams of supporting acidity and minerality give the Monvigliero much of its energy and drive. The Monvigliero has firmed up quite a bit since bottling and I expect it will require at least a few years to fully come together."
