Barolo 'Monvigliero'

Barolo 'Monvigliero'

Barolo Monvigliero Paolo Scavino
  • Nebbiolo from Monvigliero, the Grand Cru of Verduno village, first produced by Scavino in 2007
  • In the northern part of the Barolo region, this vineyard lies in a very special microclimate: warm during the day and cool at night due to the fresh air currents from the Tanaro river
  • 310 meters elevation with south-east orientation
  • Predominantly limestone soil, light colored mixed with chalky veins
  • Harvested by hand, normally after the 10th of October
  • Submerged-cap maceration (10-12 days on avg)
  • Indigenous yeast fermentation (20-30 days on avg) in stainless steel
  • Malolactic fermentation in 225 L barrels over the winter
  • Aged 11 months in neutral French oak barrels and 13 months in large casks, plus 8 months in stainless steel and 6 months in bottle
  • Approximately 600 cases produced annually

"One of the more reticent wines in the range, the 2011 Barolo Monvigliero is also one of the most promising. Understatement and nuance are the calling cards in a Barolo that captures a highly appealing interplay between the unique personality of this Verduno site and the trademark Scavino textural richness. Bright beams of supporting acidity and minerality give the Monvigliero much of its energy and drive. The Monvigliero has firmed up quite a bit since bottling and I expect it will require at least a few years to fully come together."
