"Ripe red fruit, white pepper, leather, geranium and blood orange aromas come to the forefront on the stunning 2022 Freisa from Cavallotto. It's delicious and enveloping, delivering layers of strawberry, blood orange, truffle and licorice flavors before closing on mint and a salty note. Firm, fine-grained tannins and surprisingly fresh acidity for the hot, dry vintage keep it nicely balanced. Drink 2027–2032. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O'Keefe August 2024"

"Full of details of prunes, stony salinity, earthy notes and forest floor, tannins firm and slightly sticky on the gums, but with crisp acidity. It's almost austere on the finish, but dynamic and balanced nonetheless, leaving room for a refreshing hint of menthol. An old-fashioned wine, perhaps even a bit funky, but sumptuously complex."

"Opening to a dark Nebbiolo color, the organic Cavallotto 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a little richer in this vintage. The quality of aromas also takes on a bigger profile with dried blackberry, licorice and earthy black truffle. This apparently comes from the fruit but is also shaped by the wine's long aging regime that sees 36 months in Slavonian oak casks. As a result, the delicate mineral and floral nuances that are an important feature of this wine are less prominent in 2020. This is a release of 18,582 bottles."

"This spicy red delivers cherry, raspberry, earth and eucalyptus flavors on a broad, dense frame, yet still remains fluid. Burly tannins put a lock on the finish, where accents of orange peel and spices linger. Best from 2028 through 2047. —B.S."

"A youthful saturated red/ruby color, the 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis leaps from the glass with tangy aromas of sour cherries, orange peel, clove (it smells like heffeweisen), and dried earth. The palate is lovely, revealing a refined structure, ripe, velvety tannins, and a pure core of concentration with a ripe yet weightless feel. It has good depth and remains fresh, and its structure lasts long on the finish, but so does its fruit. I liked the palate more than the nose at this stage, and it's likely going to improve with time in bottle over the next 12-15 years. Drink 2026-2040."

"The 2020 Barolo Bricco Boschis is beautifully rich and resonant right out of the gate. Black cherry, blackberry, licorice, cloves, leather and scorched earth are amplified in this decidedly dense, large-scaled Barolo from Cavallotto. There's a good bit of finesse here, but the 2020 could stand to shed some baby fat. Even so, there is certainly no harm in drinking this now. What a gorgeous Barolo this is."

"Mid-to-deep ruby. Very youthful on the nose, like the wine was just racked off from the cask. Very distinctive. Cranberry and savoury spice with hints of tamarind and garden herbs. Racy acidity that works like a shot of energy. Wired raspberry and completely dry. Stunning, fine, gravelly tannins. Leggerezza! (WS)"

"Rose, violet, new leather and forest floor are just some of the aromas you,ll find on Cavallotto,s excellent 2019 Bricco Boschis. Full-bodied and still youthfully austere, it shows great aging potential, delivering juicy red cherry, wild raspberry, star anise and tangy mineral notes suggesting rusty iron, all set against a backbone of tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity lends balance and great energy. Drink 2029†2049. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O,Keefe March 2023 'kerinokeefe"

"Alfio Cavallotto is one of the most traditional producers in Langhe. His winemaking is not only classic but old-fashioned: indigenous yeast, oak fermentation, almost no temperature control, and long maceration with submerged cap. His wines are dark and concentrated and this 2019 is no different. Earthy and smoky, it has dark cherry and blood orange aromas alongside plenty of dried fruits. There's firm acidity to the fore, as well as firm tannins, with great mid-palate extraction. There's ome stickiness on the gums now so it comes across as very austere at the moment, but it's very good on the finish. This deserves more time in bottle and consumers who appreciate the style."

"This estate is certainly the most prolific interpreter of the hilltop Bricco Boschis MGA in Castiglione Falletto. The Cavallotto 2019 Barolo Bricco Boschis (a certified organic wine) would benefit from more time in the bottle. I encountered many Barolos in 2019 that reveal a slightly reductive approach that bodes well for long cellaring. This wine is characterized by velvety black fruit that is framed by dusty nuances of crushed limestone. It builds focus and precision with more time in the glass. Some 18,800 bottles were released."

Harmonious overall, lingering with generous detail on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 2,500 cases made, 750 cases imported."

"Cask sample.Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Very compact nose of raspberry coulis with salty hints underneath. Very pretty, aromatic raspberry palate with firm, underlying tannins but this is still in cask and will need substantial time once this is in bottle. Energetic acidity tied to the fruit. Very complete and with an impressive, focused raspberry finish that can only be counted in light years. Very tannic at the moment. (WS)Drink 2026 † 2040"

"The 2018 Barolo Bricco Boschis pours a deep ruby and has spiced and enveloping aromatics of cigar box, leather, pure red cherry, and turned earth. This medium-bodied red is approachable and graceful, with moderate tannins and good concentration in its notes of Earl Grey tea, blood orange, and raspberry liqueur. Drink 2024-2044."

"A firmly structured, dry Barolo, with a core of cherry and plum shaded by earth and tobacco elements. Turns austere, picking up an underlying mineral streak on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2038."

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. A cool nose with herbal notes and touches of sweet ripe fruit and a hint of old leather. Supple fruit lightened up by bright acidity and grainy tannins that are a little demanding right now. Long yet subdued marasca cherry finish. (WS)Drink 2023 † 2036"
