Laurent Betton’s St. Joseph is classically pure, traditional Northern Rhone Syrah. Having studied with some of the most prestigious growers in the area, including Jean-Michel Gerin of Cote Rotie, Betton created his domaine in 1988. Today he owns 3.9 hectares total, 2.2 in St-Joseph and the remainder in Condrieu. He harvests by hand, employing partial whole-cluster fermentation (only about 10% whole cluster), and he ages 80% of his wine for 12 months in 1-to-5 year old barriques (the last 20% in tank). Betton’s St. Joseph is gutsy, exuberantly aromatic, and varietally spot-on—very much in a classic, deliciously sauvage style. Quantities are minuscule, and we encourage you not to miss out on this exciting producer!
