Green & Red Vineyard
Green & Red Vineyards was founded by Jay Heminway in 1969 in Napa Valley. Originally a property with a hunting cabin and abandoned structures, Heminway planted Zinfandel and other varieties, naming the vineyard after the distinctive red chert soils and green serpentine veins on the land. Over the years, Green & Red expanded with vineyards like Chiles Mill, Catacula, and Tip Top, each contributing unique terroir to their wines. Tobin Heminway, Jay’s daughter, now leads Green & Red Vineyards alongside her husband Ray Hannigan, Winemaker Aaron Whitlatch, Vineyard Manager Salvador Duran, and Assistant Winemaker Luke Nio. Jay Heminway passed away in 2019, leaving the vineyard in Tobin’s capable hands.
Founded during the vibrant cultural backdrop of the 1960s Berkeley scene, Green & Red emerged from a group of friends passionate about local food and wine, including luminaries like Alice Waters and Bob Wax. Jay Heminway’s journey to Napa Valley led him to discover the rugged beauty of the Vaca Mountain Range, where he found the perfect terrain to cultivate his vision of exceptional wines. The vineyard’s first vintage in 1977 marked the beginning of a legacy rooted in craftsmanship and a deep connection to the land.
Throughout its history, Green & Red has fostered collaborations with esteemed winemakers and vineyards, including partnerships with Biale Vineyards, Scribe, Brown Estate, and Ridge Vineyards. These collaborations have underscored Green & Red’s commitment to quality and community within the Napa Valley wine industry. Today, Green & Red continues to produce distinctive Zinfandel and other varietals, honoring Jay Heminway’s legacy under the leadership of Tobin Heminway, ensuring the vineyard remains a beacon of excellence and innovation in winemaking.
