Domaine Batard Langelier

Domaine Batard Langelier

Jérémie Batard is the third generation of his family to farm and make wine in the village of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre, located between the crus of Château Thébaud and Monnières Saint-Fiacre. The family domaine was founded in 1910 by Jérémie’s grandfather Denis, who passed it down to his son Pascal before Jérémie arrived in 2009 to take over the property. The Batard family have long been exceptional stewards of their land, farming sustainability and without herbicides and pesticides, leading Jérémie to achieve organic certification soon after taking over the estate. Because of the varied nature of terroirs on this small property, all the cuvées are based on soil types, which allows for a deep dive into the gorgeous mineral-infused expressions of their organic Melon de Bourgogne (the variety of Muscadet). Vinification is simple and traditional, with light pressing, settling, and fermentation with indigenous yeast in underground glass-enameled tanks that are typical of the region. The time on lees is adapted to the vineyards to obtain an optimal expression of the different terroirs, ranging from 7 months for the granite-based “Les Prières” cuvée, to 36 months for the gneiss-based cru Monnières Saint-Fiacre, and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Today, Domaine Batard Langelier is a leading voice of the newer generation of Muscadet, with organic farming, agroforestry, and terroir-focused wines.
