Detert Family Vineyards
Nestled within the historic To Kalon Vineyard of Napa Valley lies Detert Family Vineyards, a testament to generations of dedication to the land and the craft of winemaking. The Detert family’s journey in America began with William Ferdinand Detert’s pioneering spirit in the late 19th century, evolving from gold mining to cattle ranching and intertwining with California’s landscape. In 1954, Hedwig Detert, affectionately known as Mutti, acquired 50 acres of the iconic To Kalon Vineyard, laying the foundation for Detert Vineyards. Sometime in the 1950s, Hedwig divided the property between her son, Gunter Detert, and her son-in-law, Allen Horten, which became Macdonald Vineyards.
Since the early days of winegrowing, the Detert family has remained steadfast in their commitment to quality, with three generations nurturing a deep love for their vineyard and its unique terroir through home winemaking endeavors. In 2000, the great-grandsons of Hedwig Detert embarked on their commercial winemaking journey, marking a new chapter in the family’s storied history. Detert Vineyard boasts two distinct blocks: the East Block, with old-vine Cabernet Franc dating back to 1949, and the newly replanted West Block, reflecting the family’s forward-thinking approach, nurtured by renowned viticulturist Mike Wolf.
Under the guidance of founder and winemaker Tom Garrett, Detert wines embody the family’s passion and expertise, with a commitment to excellence and innovation honed through Tom’s extensive experience. Over the past two decades, Tom’s journey—from Turley Wine Cellars to Joseph Phelps Winery, Robert Mondavi Winery, and Revana Family Vineyard—has contributed to the craftsmanship evident in every bottle. As custodians of their legacy, John Garrett and Bill Cover ensure that Detert wines remain a celebration of heritage and innovation, reflecting their deep-rooted connection to the land and their unwavering dedication to sharing the family’s story with the world.
