Amaro Camatti
For 100 years, Amaro Camatti has been emblematic of the drinking culture of the province of Genoa, Italy. Originally crafted in the small Ligurian town of Recco, from a recipe developed by chemist Umberto Briganti and named after his wife, Amaro Camatti is now produced by Sangallo Distillery Cinque Terre in San Colombano Certenoli, just a few kilometers from the original source of production.
Sangallo Distillery, a family-owned-and-operated producer of traditional, regional Italian liqueurs and spirits, was founded by Enzo Bergamino in 1964, and the distillery acquired the Amaro Camatti brand and recipe in 1994. Today, Enzo’s son Stefano helms production along with partner Marco De Marchi, and they operate with the same passion that has driven the brand for the last century. Production remains as traditional as possible, safeguarding the company’s core tenets of simplicity and authenticity and resulting in spirits and liqueurs of the highest integrity. This steadfast approach has established Amaro Camatti as one of the distillery’s most popular products, necessitating a tenfold increase in production to keep up with local and international demand.
Rather than using singular components of plants in its recipe, Amaro Camatti is crafted using several parts of its primary botanicals, including but not limited to roots, fruits, leaves, flowers, stalks, seeds, and inflorescence (the complete flowering head of a plant), creating a multifaceted and layered backbone of almond, mint, and bitter orange to complement bitter cinchona, gentian, and supplementary secret ingredients. With its highly floral aromatics and approachable ABV, Amaro Camatti effortlessly straddles the line between aperitivo and digestivo, offering endless drinking and mixing possibilities.
A century on, this historic amaro is now globally recognized, having earned the title of World’s Best Bitter at the 2023 World Liqueur Awards. Delicious on its own and versatile in any application, from simple serves to Spritzes, Amaro Camatti’s satisfying texture, well-balanced bitterness, and bright, juicy acidity deem it destined for play in the contemporary cocktail space.
