While the third Thursday in November brings excitement with the release of Beaujolais Nouveau, we all know that Beaujolais is much more than just Nouveau. At Skurnik Wines & Spirits, we celebrate the spirit of Beaujolais year-round. Our seven producers craft terroir-driven wines from some of the region’s finest parcels, each bottle capturing the essence of the land and the dedication of the families who steward these unique vineyards. Join us in raising a glass to these winemakers as we spotlight their work, honoring the traditions and innovations that shape every sip.
DOMAINE LES GARCONS
Loïc Crispin and Fabien Pinguet of Domaine Les Garcons are two friends who in 2020 took over a portion of Loïc’s family’s vineyards in the village of Charentay, within the Brouilly appellation, and established their exciting new domaine. Loïc and Fabien inherited very old vines, with an average of around 45 years old, including a 1ha parcel planted in 1919 that goes into their spectacular Beaujolais-Villages. They are two of the most forward-thinking farmers we work with. They are Demeter certified biodynamic, using cover crops and planting trees through their parcels to create a wholistic biosphere for their vines. Coupled with their terroir that sits in a very cool micro-climate, with east and northeast-facing sites, they make incredibly crunchy wines that rank among the top in the region.
DOMAINE DE FA [A & M GRAILLOT]
Domaine de Fa was founded in 2013 by the Graillot brothers Maxime and Antoine. When they decided to look north beyond the dramatic slopes of the Rhone Valley, they struck gold and purchased prime high-altitude vineyards in Fleurie and Saint Amour and are now making some of the finest wines in the area. The Graillot family is always a force to be reckoned with and now they show off their delicate touch with gorgoeusly perfumed and mineral.
DOMAINE DE LA MADONE
Domaine de la Madone is a wonderful family estate in the granite-laden village of Le Perréon. Few estates craft such character-rich, expressive Gamay outside Beaujolais’ band of “cru“ villages. That’s Madone’s secret, Le Perréon is a natural extension of that band, widely recognized to be in the same qualitative league as its more famous neighbors. Brothers Olivier and Bruno Bererd tend to very old vines, many which are more than 100 years old, on incredibly steep hillsdies. They simply make staggeringly delicious Beaujolais from the granite slopes of Le Perréon.
DOMAINE DES MARRANS
Domaine des Marrans is located in Fleurie, in the heart of the northernmost section of Beaujolais. Founded in 1970, the owner is the young and talented Mathieu Mélinand, who joined the domaine in 2008. With old vines and granite sites, Mathieu is growing some of the area’s most pristine Gamay through his organic work in the vines. His lineup is remarkably pure and fresh, with a grain and spice to the old vine Gamay that underlines quality terroir with clear definition and racy floral deliciousness.
DOMAINE MICHEL TETE
Domaine du Clos du Fief (Domaine Michel Tete) is run by the 4th generation father-son team of Michel and Sylvain Tête in Juliénas. This great village traces its name to Julius Caesar and the history of this area dates back more than 2,000 years to the Gallo-Roman period. Michel and Sylvain harken their wines back to the classics: low yields, meticulously farmed vineyards, and low intervention winemaking, resulting in serious, mouthwatering, terroir-driven reds.
JEAN-MARC LAFONT
Domaine de Bel Air has perched over the Ardieres Valley for nearly 170 years in the village of Lantignié. Today, Jean-Marc Lafont and his wife Annick have been running this historic estate since 1985. Owing to the steep vineyard slopes (20 to 38% grade), almost all vineyard work hast to be done by hand. Generally, the winemaking is traditional semi-carbonic with each terroir vinified individually in low-capacity vats. By keeping with tradition and staying in tune with the region’s terroir, Jean-Marc and Annick produce highly expressive wines that show off the majestic terroir of this area.
PAUL DURDILLY ET FILS
Domaine Paul Durdilly is a small father-son team with some of the highest vineyards in the Beaujolais appellation. Their vineyards are a mix of granite, schist, river debris, and clay. The cuvée Grandes Coasses has a higher proportion of granite and limestone than the average Beaujolais appellation wine, allowing the Durdilly family to craft expressive, red fruit-driven, mouthwatering, and deliciously spicy Gamay.
