Summer Cocktails with Tom Jackson of Supergay Spirits

Summer Cocktails with Tom Jackson of Supergay Spirits

In this video, Tom shares two summery cocktail recipes he developed specifically with Supergay vodka: the Farmer’s Cosmo and the Spicy Boy.

Tom left his previous career driven by his twin passions: to create the best vodka ever and to bring more joy into the world of craft spirits. He spent months laboring over the perfect recipe, and eventually Supergay was born.

Supergay is intentionally crafted in small batches with organic corn from Upstate New York and filtered through activated coconut charcoal. It is naturally gluten-free and contains zero additives. The result is an exceptionally smooth vodka with a touch of sweetness on the finish that is perfect for sipping on its own, or, as Tom likes to say, “It’s a vodka that you can put in a cocktail when you don’t want to hide the vodka.”

In addition to creating a quality distillate with an invigorating sense of joy, Supergay donates a percentage of its proceeds to LGBTQ+ foundations and other socially just causes that promote and cultivate equality, inclusion, and hospitality.

Hi, my name is Tom Jackson. I am the founder of Super Gay Spirits, and today we are going to be making two cocktails. We are going to be doing a Farmer’s Cosmo, and then we’re also going to be doing a Spicy Boy, which is kind of our take on a spicy margarita with vodka and blood orange.

00:19 – 00:43

So we can start with our Farmer’s Cosmo. So the reason we’re calling it the Farmer’s Cosmo is because this version is a little fruitier. So we are adding in some nectarine liqueur from a producer upstate, and that really adds just a juicy brightness to this Cosmo that we got really excited about when we first started developing it about a year ago.

00:43 – 01:21

All right, so let’s get started with this farmer’s Cosmo. Cosmo’s are a drink that I think are having a bit of a moment right now. It kind of fell out of fashion as a cocktail back in the nineties when Sex and the City made the Cosmo kind of the go to drink for women and gay men, frankly, across the world. And then the Cosmo kind of got diluted in a lot of ways. People started to think it was think of it more as a kind of vodka cranberry rather than what it really is, which is a very well-balanced cocktail that has a lot of fresh lime, beautiful cranberry, of course, vodka.

01:21 – 02:04

All right. So let’s let’s put this together. So the Farmer’s Cosmo has 1.5 parts vodka. We are, of course, using Supergay vodka. Then we’re doing one part cranberry juice. Choose your favorite cranberry juice. We are doing half a part of nectarine liqueur, half a part of triple sec. And then we are doing half a part of fresh lime juice. So put it in a shaker. So this is a very juicy, bright, citrusy cranberry forward but also you get that kind of extra brightness and juiciness from the nectarine. And pour that out. Look at that beautiful, bright light pink. This is the perfect summer drink. Enjoy!

02:06 – 02:45

Alright, so we’re going to make a Spicy Boy. This is our version of a spicy margarita but with vodka. So it’s pretty simple to make. You are going to do two parts Supergay vodka, of course, our favorite vodka. Two parts of blood orange juice. This just adds like a really lovely, juicy, citrusy element to this cocktail. Then we are going to do half an ounce of chili infused simple sirup. So this has jalapeños and serranos and I boiled them in a pot with water for about 5 minutes. So it’s not too strong, but it’s got a really nice kick. You can always add more if you like it spicier for less. Then we’re going to do half a part of lime juice.

02:45 – 03:16

We’re going to prepare a glass. This is a mixture I also made last night, which is some sugar and some chili peppers. Get yourself a beautiful, beautifully made clear ice cube and put that in there and give it a shake. So this is the Supergay Spicy Boy. It’s very refreshing. Got a nice kick, got a nice amount of citrus. It’s just really lovely on a hot afternoon.

03:16 – 03:36

Vodka has a history of being like a very gay drink historically in the gay community. Vodka, vodka soda is kind of like the go to drink, which was another reason why we wanted to start with a vodka. We wanted to create a vodka that was accessible in price, but also elevated in ingredients.

03:36 – 03:45

We’re using organic corn. You know, we’re doing this. It’s handcrafted. We are filtering through activated coconut charcoal that doesn’t strip too much of the flavor.

03:45 – 04:28

So vodka is, you know, a traditionally very easy to make spirit. It’s not a complicated recipe, but we did spend a really long time developing a recipe. Probably way longer that was financially advisable, but we really wanted to get it right. We did blind tasting of 50 vodkas that were, you know, from ranging in price and we ranked them from 1 to 50 and then we took the top three of those and that was kind of our base to be. So we would do blind tastings with our recipe against those three. And we kept doing that, tasting bartenders tasting friends blind until we beat those top three. And then once we’d done that, we felt really confident that we had a unique vodka recipe.

04:28 – 04:45

So I would say what sets our recipe apart from other vodkas is that you’re going to get a slightly sweeter finish. We use organic corn from New York State. Slightly sweeter, a little rounder. It’s very smooth. We like to say it’s a vodka that you can put in a cocktail when you don’t want to hide the vodka.

04:45 – 05:29

People often say, you know, “What makes Supergay different?” Or you know, “Why are you called Supergay?” is also a question we get a lot, which is a good question. I would say the intention behind Supergay was really to create a brand that was created by our community and for our community. So whether that was working with an artist like Blake Mitchell, who did our illustration for our bottle, or whether that’s working with likeminded partners in events at bars and, you know, all the opportunities we have to give back to charity events where they’re really doing great work to support, you know, the community or whether that’s giving back a portion of our proceeds to organizations.

05:29 – 06:09

Each year around June, we get multiple emails or requests or sometimes they just pop up on Instagram where I see the bars and restaurants have decided to create a cocktail for the month and they’re donating a dollar for every cocktail or 10% from every drink to organizations that we support. And this is always unprompted, like we never encourage anyone to do that. But the fact that people really find in their hearts to want to do that each year is like—it’s very rewarding and very meaningful, and it’s very heartening to see. Makes me proud to be a part of—a small part of something like that.

06:09 – 06:27

For obvious reasons. June is our biggest month of the year. It’s our Super Bowl, New Year’s Eve, Christmas, Hanukkah, all wrapped into one. It’s our big, big month. But for us, you know, we’re Supergay, 365 days of the year. So, I always like to encourage people to drink Supergay any time of the year, not just in June.

06:27 – 06:52

I appreciate everyone who supports the brand. You know, our intention really was to create an elevated, delicious vodka that’s going to mix beautifully into cocktails, but is also, you know, delicious on its own. Thank you to all the bars, restaurants and stores that are stocking us and supporting us. And thank you for spending some time with us.
