Syrah, ‘Under Woods’, Ben Haines

Haines discovered “Under Woods” in 2010, and was gobsmacked by the sheer concentration and character delivered by this vineyard. Rising from 50m to 150 altitude over a distance of 400m, planted on grey gravelly loam/mudstone and battling minimal water and constant threat from surrounding wildlife, this site is marginal to say the least; but when it all lines up, this fruit is epic.

The Steels Creek vineyard is in the Yarra Valley  between Kinglake and Yarra Glen.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson-purple; a rich, spicy plum and blackberry bouquet flows into a very well-balanced medium-to full-bodied palate; there is abundant fruit, and the oak fits well; the tannins are in balance.
