Roxheimer Höllenpfad:
Famous, steeply sloping vineyard in a small side valley of the middle section of the Nahe River. The Höllenpfad (“Path to Hell”) name is an old one, likely referencing both the vineyard‘s steep slope as well as the unique color of the red sandstone. The surrounding landscape is bathed daily in the rich, warm light of the evening sun as it reflects off the hillside‘s distinctive red soil. It‘s also not hard to imagine that the word “Hell” might have been uttered by many a winegrower after a particularly laborious day on these steep slopes. The weathered warm sandstone of the Rotliegend strata lends the wines their inimitable character. Grapes grown here tend to be very small with intense, nuanced aromas; the resulting wines are elegant with a spicy mineral fruit and excellent aging potential.

"Very striking nose of wild berries and herbs (tarragon!) plus some white peach. Very zesty and vibrant with stacks of mountain freshness on the sleek and focused body, this has stacks of lime zest and pith at the very energetic dry finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold."

"The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad is from Permian red sandstone. Despite much swirling, the nose is rather shy and does not want to give up any secrets. The taut palate is more forthcoming with a bright, crystal-clear lemon note. The 2022 is a linear wine with a proper streak of lemon zestiness and a deep well of ripe lemon freshness that is serene, streamlined, clear and lasting. Lovely. The fine acidity is buffered with a beautiful, subtle length. (Bone-dry)"

"The 2023 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad is harvested from around 50-year-old vines on steep, south-facing Permian red sandstone. It's made half and half in neutral wood and stainless steel. Lovely savor spreads from the glass with notions of yarrow crushed against stone. The palate is slender but concentrated and vivid, with a juiciness that has something of apple, something of herbal tisane, something of tart orange zest; all are beautifully taut and elongated. The 2023 is understated and lovely, with a savory zestiness on the clean-cut finish. (Bone-dry)"

"Cultivated in red sandstone in a south-facing VDP.Erste Lage vineyard, the 2023 Roxheimer Höllenpfad Riesling trocken opens with a deep, pure, clear and intense, well-concentrated and savory bouquet with stony and herbal notes that are greenish or even grassy and earthy and also phenolic notes. Round and juicy on the palate, with a touch of sweetness, this is a charmingly elegant and fruity Riesling with gentle acidity but a linear mineral finish and aftertaste. Still young, this 2023 should be cellared for at least another three years or so to get the best of it. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2024."
