Riesling Zobing, Hirsch

Kamptal DAC

A classic bedrock Riesling from terraced vineyards situated around the old wine-producing village of Zöbing in Kamptal; a tasteful expression of the aromatic character of the variety. The grapes were picked from relatively young vines with an average age of 15 years old. Fermentation occurred at 22°C in stainless steel tanks using only natural yeasts. The wine rested on its fine lees until mid-February.

THE 2014 VINTAGE

We completed the 2014 harvest at the end of September after perfect timing and having applied forward-thinking procedures in our vineyards. After such a challenging and extremely labour intensive vintage, we were delighted with the results. Thanks to extreme crop-thinning in July, we were able to start harvesting the grapes as early as 15 September, and we celebrated the end of the harvest with an intimate harvest festival a month later. In the cellar; gentle clarification, followed by an encouragingly slow and steady fermentation. This was an indication of a perfect supply of nutrients for the grapes during the growing season.

Review:
A gorgeous nose evokes saffron, moss, iris and lily-of-the-valley along with anticipations of the white peach and apple that then dominate a slightly waxy, palpably dense yet buoyant palate. Orange rind accents and the persistence of inner-mouth floral perfume add appeal, leading to a finish of infectious juiciness, delightful levity (at well under 12% alcohol) and seeming suffusion of crushed stone. Most of the truly astonishing values from this vintage involve Grüner Veltliner, but here’s a Riesling whose price/quality rapport wows. What’s more, its energetically interactive and refreshing appeal had not dimmed in the least on the occasion of a September 2105 retasting.
