Malbec, ‘Reserve’, Altos Las Hormigas

Malbec is hand-picked from 100% calcareous soil of Uco Valley, limestones over alluvial deposits of the Tunuyan River in Altamira, the alluvial terrace of Arroyo Grande in Vista Flores, and the alluvial with calcareous highlands of Gualtallary. The terraces contain medium pebbles with occasional boulders covering calcium carbonate paste of around 7-10% active lime which contributes structure, texture and a long, impressive finish.

Grapes were harvested by hand with delicate bunch selection. The destemmed berries were loaded by gravity to allow a gentle breaking of skins. During fermentation, very gentle pigeage was used on the cap to avoid over-extraction. The juice fermented using native yeast. The wine was matured in 3,500 liter untoasted oak Foudres for 18 months, and then six months in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

An opaque purple wine with highlights of bright ruby. The nose is filled with plum, raspberries, chocolate and a touch of leather. This wine offers a strong, well-structured palate. Intense red and blue fruit encompass your mouth drawing to a long, mineral and elegant finish. Pure expression of the small calcareous areas of Vista Flores, Gualtallary and Altamira.

Review:
The 2013 Malbec Reserva is sourced from Vista Flores and Chacayes in the Valle de Uco where they look for calcareous soils on the alluvial terraces of the Arroyo Grande river. The wine matured in untoasted 3,500-liter oak foudres for 18 months. The wine has the bright red fruit and unnoticeable oak profile of the wines from Altos las Hormigas. It is very fresh and shinny in a vintage like 2013. There are raspberries, wild strawberries and red currants, with subtle spices and a medium-bodied palate with very fine tannins and great acidity that makes it really easy to drink and pleasant. Great Malbec at a very attractive price.

A red with pretty spice, leather, blackberry and licorice character. A combination of pure fruit and decadence. Full body, fine and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. All there. Drink or hold.
