Gruner Veltliner Loibenberg Smaragd, Alzinger

The south facing terraces of the Loibenberg bathe in the sun the entire day and are considered the warmest of the Wachau. Unfortunately this assumption leaves out a number of other important factors that affect both of our Smaragd wines. A good 200 vertical metres span the distance between the first terrace at the foot of the slope and the last terrace at the peak. In addition to this, many of the vines are in the shadow of the neighbouring forest and ravines open here to the north giving way to cool breezes, particularly in the night. Just how varying the soils are, can also be perceived in the difference between our two wines. The Grüner Veltliner is based predominantly on loess and exhibits a warmer, creamier texture. Riesling roots in meagre, shallow topsoil over rock and displays a much firmer, more structured style.
