Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Riesling 1er Lage Trocken, von Winning

This is vineyard that faces due east and has chalky clay and sandstone soils, which sits above the Leinhöhle just below the woods—perhaps an advantage in the new climate era? It was formerly known as Waldberg but was renamed after WWII to sound more romantic. This is a classified Grosses Gewächs site but Andreas and Stephan have decided to label it is as the German equivalent to 1er Cru, Erste Lage.

Tasting Notes

Until Von Winning I don’t think anyone knew the potential of this upslope vineyard in Deidesheim. It’s an amazing value considering what it offers for the pittance it ciosts; wry, grainy and excellent, open-armed and terroiré, but terroir detached from “mineral,”: more ginger, guava and pineapple; hints at woodiness and resolves into a suave finish of pink peppercorns. — Terry Theise
