Chardonnay, ‘Oliver’s Vyd’, Talley Vineyards

This chardonnay was produced entirely from the original section of Oliver’s Vineyard planted in 1991 and named for Talley Farms founder Oliver Talley. One of two vineyards owned by the Talley Family in the Edna Valley AVA, just four miles from the ocean, the soil type of the vineyard is Marimel Sandy Clay Loam.

The 2014 vintage marked the third year of the California drought. Warm and dry conditions resulted in the earliest harvest start date, August 1, in the history of Talley Vineyards. At 9 inches, total rainfall was less than 50% of the average for Coastal San Luis Obispo County. Ideal growing conditions during bloom time in the spring afforded excellent fruit set with very little mildew or botrytis pressure during the remainder of the season. The wines produced in 2014 share many of the characteristics that made the 2012 and 2013 vintages so appealing:  charm, elegance and balance.

Tasting Notes

Light straw in color, the 2014 vintage of Oliver’s Vineyard Chardonnay is a stunning expression of the appellation. Aromas of pear and toasted almonds are layered with a hint of oak that continues on the palate. Light in weight and marked with bright acidity, the 2014 Oliver’s Vineyard Chardonnay culminates in a smooth, dry finish. Try pairing this elegant wine with fresh seafood paella.
