All 2012, 76-24 PN/CH with 6% Verzenay red. That’s what I’m talking about! 2012 Rosés are apparently all gushing with deliriously pretty fruit, but this one holds a little slip back. Or it’s cranky from disgorgement (1/2016), but in any case nothing can smell like this does without eventually tasting like it.

A Pehu-Simonet NV Brut Rose incorporates 30% Chardonnay, and 10% of its dominant Pinot represents barrique-raised still wine. A tart-edged tang of fresh red currant and sour cherry is suffused with salt, chalk, and mussel shells for a bright, juicy, and intensely invigorating, downright gripping performance. This is hardly your “pretty in pink” rose, and I suspect that it will be more interesting – not to mention preserve its formidable sense of energy and stamina – after a year or so more in bottle.
Firmly structured and racy, with mouthwatering acidity, this powerful version offers a fine, satiny texture and well-kint flavors of black raspberry, bread dough, salted almond and pomegranate, with hints of fresh ginger and spice on the creamy finish. Drink now through 2020. -A.N.
(70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay, from Verzenay and Verzy; disgorged in August, 2012 after 30 months on its lees): Light, bright pink. Vibrant strawberry, raspberry, anise and rose pastille aromas show impressive clarity. Juicy and sharply delineated, offering spicy red berry and blood orange flavors with subtle accents of toasted bread, lavender and blood orange. Extremely elegant and aromatically complex rose with outstanding finishing cut and persistence.
The NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru is quite subtle and understated in this vintage. Sweet red berries, crushed flowers, mint and sweet spices grace the palate in an exquisite Rosé that is pure elegance and polish. Hard candy, rose petals and mint linger on the finish. This is one of the silkier wines in David Pehu's range. The Brut Rosé is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, mostly 2010 vintage. This bottle was disgorged in June 2012.
