Champagne ‘Anecdote’, Mousse
Vallee de la Marne
Tasting NotesWe, ah, looked the other way last year with the 2011, but this all-Chard Champagne is delightful once more. Deg 2/21/16, it isn’t quite the charmeur it once was—when it was less dry—but with 2012’s power it renders a stern, stony Chardonnay in a convincing and balanced form. Lovely apple-flesh aroma (red gala, Fiji), a mouthfilling palate; tastes consequential and washes into a huge minerally finish that reminded me of Chenin Blanc. We bought all he’d give us, which isn’t much. —Terry Theise

The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Lieu-Dit Les Varosses is 100% Chardonnay from the 2008 vintage, which explains its vibrant, taut personality. Lemon, smoke, slate and pastry burst from the glass as this exciting, racy wine shows off its considerable personality. Intensely saline and captivating, the Varosses impresses for its pure, unbridled energy. There is a lot to like here. Disgorgement date: June 12, 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.
Open-knit, with a lively bead and a rich and tangy note of Key lime pie mixing with hints of poached pear, smoke and graphite. Very juicy, with a long, minerally finish. Disgorged June 12, 2012. Drink now through 2017. 25 cases imported. –AN
(all 2008 wine; made from a single vineyard in Cuisles; disgorged in March, 2013 after four years on its lees): Light gold. Complex, perfumed bouquet evokes tangerine, dried pear, anise and dusty minerals, with notes of ginger and chamomile building in the glass. Dry, focused and nicely concentrated, offering intense orchard and citrus fruit flavors with gentle floral and herbal nuances. Dense but lively Champagne with good finishing power and clarity.
