Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘Estate’, Eisele Vineyard

To produce the estate’s flagship wine, three quarters of the 38-acre Eisele Vineyard is dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon and its companion varieties, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The resulting wine is an intense expression of the Eisele Vineyard terroir, exhibiting characteristic flavors of cassis, blackberry, cedar and chocolate, with a lingering mineral finish. Cabernets from the Eisele Vineyard are highly regarded for their complexity, concentration, weight without heaviness, silky texture and ability to age for decades.

A dry winter turned into a wet spring, with over eleven inches of rain in March that filled the vineyard soils to field capacity. What ensued was an ‘ideal’ growing season, with even budbreak, beautiful weather at bloom, and fruit set that produced a bountiful crop. The full-sized clusters across the Eisele Vineyard completed veraison by mid-July, and flavor intensity developed steadily throughout the summer. Warm days and cool nights over the length of the growing season resulted in daily temperature swings of up to 50 degrees, and these variances allowed the tannins to ripen harmoniously, while sugar levels increased slowly through a cooler than average September.

Harvest of the Bordeaux varietals began on September 22nd, and three days of moderate heat at the start of October, set the stage for the final pick of Cabernet Sauvignon on the 16th. All clusters were hand-picked in prime condition during cool morning hours, resulting in one of the finest expressions of Eisele Vineyard terroir. 2012 will be remembered as an exceptional vintage.

The grapes were certified ‘Organic’ by California Certified Organic Farmers and ‘Biodynamic’ by Demeter.

Tasting Notes

“The 2014 vintage is classic Eisele, displaying a more forward character than 2013. The nose opens on notes of white flowers, wild berries, blackcurrant, blackberries and dried rose petals, characteristic of the Eisele fruit, with subtle undertones of vanilla, cinnamon and grilled almonds. With aeration, it progressively gives way to freshly-cut ripe cherries. The ample mouthfeel is very silky with tight-knit, chiseled tannins that support this vintage’s aristocratic figure. The fruit is pure, sustained by deliciously ripe and savory undertones. The delicately saline finish of the 2014 lingers with pepper, turmeric and licorice. In this great vintage, the wine combines outstanding brightness and aromatic complexity with the Eisele hallmarks of elegance and finesse.”

Review:
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the vintage’s precociousness and front-end loaded, flattering style. It is medium to full-bodied, shows beautiful fruit purity, deep black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, moving toward blacker berries. There is a floral characteristic, spice, and a full-bodied, lush mouthfeel with silky tannin. Drink it over the next 25 years.

Review:
Intensely scented dried flowers on the nose in the rose to lilac spectrum. Raspberry and blackberry undertones. Rose perfumes. It's full-bodied, yet everything's in finesse. Superfine tannins coat your palate and give you incredible length, and it all last for minutes on the palate. Great resonance. Not the power of 2013 but intellect and persistence prevails here. A joy to taste now, but this will improve for decades ahead.
