Waldgries

“The wines show almost unparalleled character, stylistic definition and above all territoriality… Waldgries wines are always elegant and balanced throughout, with great personality.” –Gambero Rosso 2010

High up in Alto Adige, almost on the border with Austria, we have been seeking out the finest producers for you to sell… It started with San Pietro, our incredible value Pinot Grigio – but not only—this year saw a top NY Times rated Lagrein, as well as their quirky, delicious, refreshing Schiava… Then the Grand Cru arrived: Kofererhof. Recognized as one of the top white wine making estates in all of Italy, this gem of an estate graces us with a tiny allocation each year, most of which is sold out even before the massive Wine Advocate scores come out. But we didn’t stop here: this year we begin our partnership with ABBAZIA di NOVACELLA – one of the most well-known white wine producers in Italy, with an incredible history of 700 years of grape-growing and wine making in the region.

The cherry on top of all of this? Christian Plattner’s Waldgries! A small-grower and longtime friend of Gunther Kerschbaumer (owner of Kofererhof), Marc de Grazia suggested we try his wines this year at VinItaly, and we were instantly taken with his St Magdalener Classico 2010! The estate is north of Bolzano within the appellation of St Magdalener and produces only 4000 cases per year from a tiny 5 hectares.
